Medical Gas Training

At HAC Medical Gas Training & Services we are able offer a wide range of courses, which are available to all NHS and Private Healthcare Sites. Ranging from Porter and Nurse training, to full Authorised Persons qualifications, each course can be offered from our dedicated Training Centre in Leicester or on a healthcare site of your choice.

Full Authorised Person (AP) Intensive Course

Our AP Intensive course is perfect for those who wish to cover all aspects of the Full Authorised Person course over a shorter period of 4 ½ days. The course consists of mainly classroom based teaching, with some practical elements also included. As with our Full AP, the course concludes with a practical and written examination.

Authorised Person (AP) Refresher

Our AP Refresher course caters for those already qualified as Authorised Persons, who require a refresher every third year (as outlined in HTM02-01). This covers a broad outline of HTM02-01 and any updates which have occurred in the three years subsequent to attendance on the last AP training course. The course lasts for 2 ½ days and consists of classroom teaching and a practical examination to finish.

Competent Person (CP) Maintenance Course

Our CP Maintenance course is ideal for technicians and engineers who require training on the maintenance of medical gas pipeline systems. The course covers all aspects of Planned Preventative Maintenance (required to HTM02-01 standards) including the maintenance of supply equipment, terminal units and an overview of medical gas systems. Consisting of both classroom based learning and practical exercises, the course lasts for 2 ½ days, concluding in a written examination.

Competent Person (CP) Installation Course

Our CP Installation course is suitable for technicians and engineers who require training on the installation of medical gas pipeline systems. The course covers all aspects of installation, including fluxless brazing, testing and commissioning, Permit-to-Work exercise and an overview of medical gas components. The courses lasts for 2 ½ days, consists of classroom based learning and practical exercises, with an examination to finish.

Combined Competent Person (CP) Course

Our fully comprehensive Combined CP course combines both the maintenance and installation of medical gases over a 3 day period. The course includes all aspects covered in the individual CP courses and consists of classroom based learning and practical exercises. The course concludes in a written examination.

Competent Person (CP) Refresher for Installation or Maintenance

We also offer CP Refresher courses for both Maintenance and Installation respectively. Both courses run separately and are perfect for those already qualified as CP’s where refresher training is required every 3 years as per HTM02-01. The course includes an overview of HTM02-01 and covers any updates made during the most recent three years. Courses last for 2 days and finish with a written examination.

Terminal Unit Training

This course is ideal for site engineers who are responsible for the initial response to medical gas terminal unit faults, leaks and alarms. This is a Competent Person’s role but limited to first responder and terminal unit repairs only. The training takes place over the course of 1 day and finishes with a written examination.

Medical Gas Awareness: Porter Training

Annual Medical Gas Safety and Awareness training is a requirement to HTM02-01. Our course provides an overview of Medical Gases and covers the safe handling and use of medical gas equipment, specifically for porters. The course includes an overview of portable and fixed medical gas cylinders, identifying all associated hazards and safe practices. This is a 2 ½ hour course concluding with an exam, which can be carried out on a site of your choice or at our training centre.

Medical Gas Awareness: Nurse Training

Annual Medical Gas Safety and Awareness training is a requirement to HTM02-01. Our course provides an overview of Medical Gases and covers the safe handling and use of medical gas equipment specifically for clinical and nursing staff. The course includes an overview of portable and fixed medical gas cylinders, identifying all associated hazards and safe practices. This is a 2 ½ hour course concluding with an exam, which can be carried out on a site of your choice or at our training centre.

Designated Medical/Nursing Officer (DMO/DNO) Training

Our Designated Medical/Nursing Officer courses are ideal for clinical staff who have the additional responsibility of managing medical gases on wards and departments, including granting permission for works via the Permit-to-Work system, contingency planning and responding to emergency situations. The course lasts for a ½ day and consists of classroom based learning and a final examination.
It is advisable for the DMO/DNO to also take the Medical Gas Safety & Awareness course prior to the DMO/DNO course.

Laboratory Gas Training

Our Laboratory Gas Training course is designed for both NHS and Private Sector pathology laboratory staff, with a responsibility for the use of lab gases. The course covers guidelines set down in HTM 08-06, PSSR, BCGA Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice, along with the safe handling & use of cylinders and a practical demonstration in the use of lab gas manifolds. This is a 2 hour course with written exam and can be delivered on your own healthcare or laboratory site.

Oxygen Safety Course

Many Clinical or Medical Staff who do not usually work with Oxygen are working with High Flow Oxygen Therapy. Many need to work with Cylinders and equipment that is unfamiliar to them and are also asked to set-up Cylinders with no prior knowledge of such procedures. The risks to both staff and patients are high. Our Oxygen Safety Course can help to minimise this risk. To help provide knowledge and reassurance to Clinical and Medical employees, we have designed a short Medical Oxygen Safety Course. The course can be delivered face-to-face, in a classroom environment or via an online video conferencing service. The course itself takes less than one hour to complete, meaning that multiple sessions can be delivered in one day.

Liquid Nitrogen (Cryogenics) Course

Our Liquid Nitrogen course is ideal or anyone with responsibilities for handling Liquid Nitrogen throughout healthcare premises, as required to British Compressed Gas Association (BCGA) Standards. This training should be carried out every year and covers the Hazards, Responsibilities, Risks and Roles for the safe use and handling of Liquid Nitrogen. Subjects covered during the course include Properties, Uses & Hazards of Liquid Nitrogen, Safe Storage & Handling, Filling & Decanting, Dewars & Flasks and Emergency Procedures.
The course consists of both theory and practical exercises, culminating in a multiple choice exam.
